The Department of Fisheries was established in 1963 on the initiative of Prof. Ir. Soedarsono Hadisapoetro, as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture UGM, and Prof. Ir. Harjono Danoesastro and Ir. RM. Tejoyuwono Notohadiprawiro, with the management of the department by Mr. R.S. Atmohardjono, assisted by Dr. Ir. Bambang Soebiantoro, M.Sc. At that time, the Department of Fisheries was housed in the Faculty of Agriculture building in Sekip. In March 1984, the Department of Fisheries moved to Bulaksumur.
Currently, the Department of Fisheries has three study programs, namely: Aquaculture, Aquatic Resource Management, and Fish Products Technology. Given the enormous potential of fisheries resources in Indonesia and the increasingly important role of the fishing sub-sector in national development, the status of the Department of Fisheries will be upgraded to become the Faculty of Fisheries. Preparations for the establishment of the Faculty are continuing.
